What length of time is the “freeze stick” supposed to be in contact with the tooth?

I live in the UK so I hope we are talking about the same thing. A freeze stick is a cotton wool roll which has been sprayed with Ethyl Chloride, this is a freezing agent which is also used to freeze warts etc, This cotton roll is used to test the vitality of the tooth, basically to see if the nerve is dead or alive.
