Should the middle class be paying the highest taxes?

The fallacy is in your assumption that the wealthy fuel the economy, creating jobs for the rest of us. They should pay a lower rate, I agree, but if and only if they are using their profits to create jobs here in the USA. If not, they your basic reason for giving them a free pass does not apply and they should pay the higher rates along with the rest of us.
