Christians: What are your views/experiences on the gift of tongues?

The gift of tongues is a valid gift; but as Paul counseled it should only be used in the presence of another who has the gift of interpreting tongues. IMHO some religious traditions take it too far- and start spouting off in gibberish in the midst of sermons, and that just makes me run in the other direction.
